The words were written by Banjo Paterson and the music by Christina MacPherson.

Not quite. Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson was a major Australian poet and "Waltzing Matilda" is probably his best known work, internationally at least, along with "The Man from Snowy River". Ms McPherson then turned the words into music so successfully that "WM" was one of the options Australians had when voting for a new national anthem.

The song itself was first performed on 6 April 1895 by Sir Herbert Ramsay at the North Gregory Hotel in Winton, Queensland. The occasion was a banquet for the Premier of Queensland. It became an instant success.
