USC Canada was established as the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada in 1945. It is the oldest, solely CANADIAN international development agency. In 1948, the founder, Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova, disaffiliated the organization from the Unitarian Church, following a survey of the donor profile of USC supporters.
The use of the acronym, USC, goes back to the early days when Dr. Lotta referred to the organization as 'the USC'. Increasingly, the organization has referred to itself as 'USC Canada'. Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova passed away in 1990.
