Why did French sailors wear Breton stripes?

Question #123808. Asked by serpa. (Oct 12 11 5:32 PM)

    CmdrK

French law in 1858 decreed that all sailors in the French navy wear it. The idea was that it would be easier to see them if they fell ovefboard.
