http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/1804/p/b02.html THE MELBOURNE MYSTERY (1953) I include the Melbourne mystery as an Australian equivalent of the Black Dahlia murder. Fourteen-year-old Shirley Collins set out to go to her first grown-up party on September 12, 1953. The boy who had invited her was due to meet her off the train at Richmond, near Melbourne, at eight o' clock that evening. She never arrived, and on Monday morning her naked body was found 40 mi. from Melbourne. She had been battered to death with beer bottles, and then slabs of concrete had been dropped on her head, completely crushing it. Although her clothes were scattered all around, there were no signs of sexual interference. The mystery here is what happened to Shirley between the time she left her Mother at the bus stop near her home at seven o' clock and her death a few hours later. Being a shy girl, she would certainly not have gone off with a stranger. On the other hand, before she left her Mother, she commented that she had plenty of time because she was going to meet her boyfriend Ron at West Richmond Station. In fact, this is a completely different place from Richmond Station, where Ron was waiting for her. So she may have gone to the wrong station and hung around waiting for him. Even so, it remains puzzling why she didn't simply take a train back home when she realized he wasn't going to turn up.
