When one is appointed consul general (Los Angeles), as opposed to an ambassador (USA), are credentials presented?

A consul, or a consul general, is a representative of the government of his country, while an ambassador is the representative of the head of state. Only ambassadors are required to present credentials to validate their authority.
The consular service is separate from the diplomatic service, although there is some interchange of personnel between the two.
