l3i7l says: The story has it that Kennedy commissioned Pierre Salinger to buy and stockpile 1,500 Havana cigars on the eve of signing the Cuban trade embargo. Fri Jun 15 22:06:30 CDT I believe I have found the REAL story at http://www.booknotes.org/transcripts/50109.htm If you scroll down that page about 1/3 of the way you will find the whole story as related by Salinger. To summarize: Salinger met with Kruschev, in Moscow, in May 1962. At the end of the meeting Kruschev, who did not smoke cigars, gave Salinger a box of 150 Cuban cigars that Kruschev had received from Castro. Upon his return Salinger gave the cigars to Kennedy. Kennedy said he was going to destroy them, to which Salinger quipped 'I know, one by one.' Sun Jun 17 08:51:08 CDT 2001 (Reposted as one entry - McG)
