The castle in question is Stokes Castle.
How: It was built by Anson Phelps Stokes and patterned after an Italian castle in Roman Campagna. Built of hand-hewn native granite, the castle's stones were hoisted into place using a hand winch and held in place with rock wedging and clay mortar.
Why: Stokes intended it to be a summer home for his sons in Austin.
When: Construction started in 1896 and finished in 1897.
Where: West of Austin, Nevada on Highway 50. (Geographic coordinates: 39°29?37?N 117°4?45?W)
