The harbor accident which led to the explosion of the French munitions carrier SS Mont-Blanc in Halifax in WW I also answers the question. Halifax is in America (North and Canada) and the part about WW II is not certain. 9.000 people were injured by the blast and 2,000 died as a result of it.
