When did the word Gay come to signify a sexual predilection?

    Question #124849. Asked by george48. (Jan 24 12 8:26 PM)

Most consider it to be the mid 20th century but it has earlier appearances.

"The 'Dictionary of American Slang' reports that gay (adj.) was used by homosexuals, among themselves, in this sense since at least 1920."
