Why does Spanish use EE UU, instead of EU for its abbreviation of United States(Of America)?

Question #124886. Asked by geognut. (Jan 27 12 4:17 AM)

"The double E and double U indicate that the letter represents a plural. Some other common Spanish abbreviations, among them FF. AA. for Fuerzas Armadas (Armed Forces) and AA. EE. for Asuntos Exteriores (Foreign Affairs), do the same thing."

The doubling of the letter indicates a plural: "Estados Unidos".

Just putting E U would mean "United State".

It is carried over from Latin, eg LL.B= Legium Baccalaureum/Bachelor of Laws.
