When and why did outsourcing begin in the United States?

As hard as it may be to believe, outsourcing in the US began in the 1800s, due to the need for expertise in certain areas. The practice was developed more fully during the 1970s, due to financial concerns and business-growth reasons.

Rising local costs, including labor costs, and stagflation in the 1980s led GM to move plants from Flint Michigan to Mexico.
