Is there a particular time of day when tornadoes are more prone to strike and if so, why?

Depending on sources, the estimates vary somewhat, but all agree it is late afternoon. Some experts say 4-9pm, others say 5-9pm. Tornadoes are caused by severe thunderstorms in warm, moist and unstable air appearing prior to a clod front, and these conditions are most likely to coexist at that time of day. Of course, they can happen any time.
