    How does a thermostat know that your house has cooled off?

    		Modern thermostats are digital. The thermostat contains a thermistor - a resistor whose resistance changes depending on temperature. The thermostat controller settings simply tell the unit whether to turn on the heating (or cooling) depending on the calibrated response of the thermistor.

    More elaborate systems contain thermistors in individual ducting lines, so those lines can be opened or closed (again depending on the temperature at the thermistor).
