    Why is a thought worth specifically one penny in the old saying, "A penny for your thoughts"?

    		The second and third references have it spot on, at least as far as the UK is concerned. The first though is in error when it says the phrase is equivalent to having your two cents worth. It does not mean saying what you think about something under discussion, it means asking someone what they were thinking about when they appear distant or abstracted.
