    How long does it for the roots of a tree to decompose after the tree itself is cut down and could the roots themselves propagate a new tree?

    		In answer to the first part, it would depend on several factors, one of which is ambient moisture. I have seen perfectly preserved rots in Arizona from trees that I am certain have been dead or sawn down at least seventy five years. Also, coniferous trees generally have a sap that is quite preservative. On the other hand, an oak or maple cut or knocked over in a moist environment will be mostly rotted in three years. As to the second part, if a tree generally suckers, then, yes it will propagate a new tree from severed roots.
