I'm trying to remember a quote. I don't know who said it but it goes something like, "It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, than to open it and remove all doubt." Can anyone help me out?

This quote is usually attributed to Mark Twain, but somewhere on the 'net' it was noted that while popularized by Twain, it did not originate with him. Since I was searching for some other quote at the time I did not make note the site, or follow-up on it. Has anybody else ever seen this attributed to another person?

I found the Lincoln quote, but no reference to when it was made; 'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.' - Abraham Lincoln

This is for seniors with a good memory. In the 1950's in a Reader's Digest Humor feature was a quote that went something like: "You no more fit (something) than namesake (or godsake)." With more after, sort of a botched translation. Our family used it as a joke message when someone had failed to do a job or chore. Anyone remember more of the quote?
