I think the question should read 'accepted' which means 'OK', and not 'excepted' which means 'left out' or 'omitted'.

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary the word - trifle can be used as a noun and a verb.
    1. something of little value, substance or importance

    2. a desert, typically consisting of plain or sponge cake often soaked with wine or spirits.

from Middle English - trufle trifle from Anglo French Trufle - triffle - fraud trick non-sense. First known use 14th century

For some strange reason while researching this one word I could well imagine someone trying to trick or fraudulently try to sell truffles when they were not really truffles at all.
