The Turfan depression in central Asia is 505 feet below sea level. Death Valley in California is pretty deep, but is it as deep as that?

Death Valley is 282 feet below sea level, so it is the lowest point not covered by water in the Western Hemisphere. The lowest in the world is the Turfan depression in central Asia, which is in the very westernmost part of China.

It should be noted that the Sea of Gallilee, the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea are all part of the same geological feature, the Afro-Syrian Rift (called the "Great Rift" by some). Beit She'an is located in the Jordan Valley, as is Jericho. The shores of the Dead Sea are the lowest part of the rift, and they are home to the lowest human settlements on Earth (the Israeli kibbutzim of Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi, among a few other resort spots). The Israeli city of Tiberias is the lowest city on the planet, on the shores of the Gallilee, at a little over 200 meters below sea level.
