Why do we say that something is as "dead as a doornail"?

    Question #126351. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 05 12 8:36 PM)

    Lottie1001

It is suggested that the doornail is dead since it is not re-usable after its end has been bent over to secure it after being hammered through the door.
