Why do we call a race that results in a tie a "dead heat"?

    Question #126352. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 05 12 8:38 PM)

    Toyah

During a horse race when there was a tie the race did not count so was therefore classed as dead.

A race in general terms is classed as a heat, therefore a tie was called a dead heat.
