Why is a simpleton called a "dope"?

    Question #126363. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 06 12 5:42 PM)

    Lottie1001

In the nineteenth century Americans used the word "dope" to refer to a thick gravy, from the Dutch word "doop". The use of the word to refer to a simpleton may come from being thick-headed.
