Certainly sounds like absinthe which was distilled from a variety of herbs including wormwood. It was popular around the turn of the 19th to 20th century, especially amongst the "art set"

It should be more like vermicelli those little pasta-worms.

Vermouth (= wormwood). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermouth Wormwood was also used at times in mead and beer, and is used in bitters (the flavouring not the type of beer) and absinthe, but vermouth is the most popular stuff it's found in. Vermouth can have other flavours as well - I have fond memories of an orange flavoured one which I haven't seen in years. In Chambéry, they produce a strawberry one (which I consider a waste of strawberries...).
