I knew a guy at school years ago who was able to turn his eyelid inside out! Does anyone know if this feat has a name and is it common?

I'm not sure if it has a name, if it does, it is probably some obscure word that no one can pronounce, or even spell. Not everyone can do this, well maybe they could if they tried, but most people wouldn't try. However, I wouldn't call it common, but I wouldn't call it rare either. When I was a teenager, I saw a lot of guys opening beer with their teeth (this was the dark ages when a church key or bottle opener had to be used, just prior to the twist top era.) Anyway, being the proud, arrogant, smartest person on the planet, female teen I was at the time, I decided, if a guy can do this, so can I! Everyone laughed, but after a few tries I did it, and I did it all the time. I became everyone's show and tell at parties, because I was the only girl anyone knew who could do it. Then I saw a guy open one with his eye! Now that's rare! Needless to say, even though I thought and still think anything a guy can do, a girl can do to, (within reason) I didn't try this. Unlike the guy that did it, I wasn't stupid! A post script to this saga. Any of the younger players at Fun Trivia, please do not try this yourself. It turns out I was stupid. Later in life, I ended up having two root canals, the stuff nightmares are made of! Not long after one of them, the tooth broke in half and had to be pulled. All because of what I did as a stupid teenager. I emphasize the word stupid!!! Now with modern technology, we have twist tops, so there is no reason to use a bottle opener, or any body parts!

The common term for this is EYELID EVERSION. It is what you might do to remove a foreign particle from your eye, although you may not necessarily turn the lid completely inside-out. The medical condition for the turning out of the eyelid, is called ECTROPION, generally the result of tissue relaxation with aging, and leads to poor drainage of tears through the nasolacrimal system. By the way ENTROPION is the turning in of the eyelid, or inversion. http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/section8/chapter94/94e.htm There is also Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) was described initially by Culbertson and Ostler in 1981. It was seen in overweight male patients with floppy, rubbery, and easily everted upper eyelids associated with chronic papillary conjunctivitis of the upper palpebral conjunctiva. (don't ask me about the medical terms) http://www.emedicine.com/OPH/topic605.htm
