The Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1969 banned the advertisement of cigarettes on American television, taking effect on January 2, 1971.

After January 1, 1971, it shall be unlawful to advertise cigarettes and little cigars on any medium of electronic communication subject to the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission.

Yup...what McGruff said.
Helped by pressure from the American Medical Association, the Federal government banned the broadcast of cigarette advertisements in America on both television and radio beginning January 1971 (per the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1969).
