What is more important in a response to one of these questions, the answer or a reference? Does anyone else find it irritating when the reply only gives a reference, leaving you asking "Well, what's the answer, then?",

I'd say the answer! But according to the posting rules, they are both critical. See link below. I guess the relative importance is a matter of opinion, but in my humble one you need the answer as an absolute minimum. The reference is just evidence that you know what you're talking about (and gives people a source to find out more).

If a reference is available, I like seeing it posted. But I don't like having to completely redirect my browser to find it (which happens when there's only a reference). Thanks.
