In the 1930s were there any scheduled passenger liner sailings between Colombia and Australia and, if not, what route(s) were generally taken for the journey, or did passengers make the journey on cargo ships?

This strikes me as a challenging research project, especially to provide the supporting web links, as required by Ask FT. I did find this site http://www.timetableimages.com/maritime/images/archives.htm, which provides some idea of what scheduled ship voyages were available in the 1930s and beyond. I am nothing remotely close to an expert on this topic, but I seriously doubt there were any direct scheduled sailings between Colombia and Australia. Some likely alternatives to connect from Colombia to Australia would be to catch a sailing via neighbouring Panama to Australia, likely with stops at Hawaii and other islands along the way. Another potential alternative would be to sail from a Pacific port in Colombia (likely Buenaventura) to Hawaii, and connect to a sailing from Hawaii to Australia.

Another idea I had to address this question was to find a shipping route map from the 1930s, and this one http://windsorplaceantiques.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a67e9197970c016767f8586c970b-800wi appears to support the approach of connecting to Australia from Colombia via Panama (or vice versa).

Many, many thanks. It was, as you say, one of the most challenging questions to appear recently on AFT.
