    What are those small thing on roofs of houses and larger building like churches shaped like small fans and seem to be made of metal do they serve a purpose or are they just ornamental?

    Without a better description the only thing I can think of is a lightning conductor.

    They are used on slate, wood shingle, and concrete tile roofs to keep ice from falling and hurting people below. Because the roof collects heat from sunlight and interior heat loss, it heats up and cools down quickly turning harmless snow into dangerous ice on a slippery surface. Asphalt shingle roofs create enough friction to make the devices unnecessary.
