Ruby and sapphire are both in the corundum gem family.

Emeralds and Aquamarines are both from the beryl fammily. Emerald and Aquamarine both start with vowels. Ruby and Sapphire do not start with vowels. Rubies and Emeralds are less common, there for more expensive, and come in various shades of one colour. Sapphires come in many colours, and aquamarines are more common, so they are less expensive. I'm sure there are many other ways this question can be answered, including what essaychess said, which means when a Ruby is not red, it is a Sapphire.
