    How and where did the terms smarty pants come from in sarcastic reference to a smart person?

    Apart from references to the word 'smarty' being used in a magazine in California in 1861 and by Mark Twain in 'Tom Sawyer' in 1876, the term 'smarty pants' is said to date back to 1941 by B. Schulenberg in 'What Makes Sammy Run?'. More info in this link:
