my resource is from a book titled 'why do clocks run clockwise? and other imponderable' by david feldman (pg. 232). hot dogs were originally sold to butcher shop by the bulk. not until the 1940s in grocery stores. baking pans back in the day
were partitioned into fours. traditionally packaged rolls came in units of 8, such as kaiser rolls and hamburger buns for example. two tiers of four. as for hot dogs being five inches long and around 1.6 oz., 12 makes roughly a pound. hope this helps.

Some hot dogs come in packs of ten. Plus not everyone uses hot dog buns (like children)
