How did Archibald Leach choose the stage name "Cary Grant"?

Question #126904. Asked by abechstein. (Sep 26 12 12:20 AM)

He chose the first name "Cary" as this was the name of a character he'd played on Broadway (in the show "Nikki"). He also chose that character's last name, Lockwood, but the studio rejected it and gave him a list of surnames they felt were suitable. Leach chose "Grant" from that list so that he'd have the same initials as Hollywood stars Clark Gable and Gary Cooper.
