If you're talking about the cartoon dog invented by David Gilbert, then information from the website "The Cartoonists" states that "Buckles is the embodiment of his creator" and that Gilbert used his own personality traits to develop the dog's "almost human personality". So it appears that Buckles has no specific breed and is anthropomorpic, which means he has had characteristics assumed to only belong to humans attributed to him to give him his character style.

I have looked high and low on the web for the origin of his being named Buckles, with no success. The best source seems to be cartoonist David Gilbert's own site, http://www.bucklescomic.com/cartoonist.html, and you could supposedly ask him directly through its message board, but he doesn't seem to have posted any answers in years. The fans in this message board have said that Buckles is no breed in particular, just a mutt.
