Which are there more of in the world, cats or dogs?

From what I read there is 400 million dogs in the world, and only 220 million cats in the world (This is assuming we are referring to domestic cats and dogs and not the wild ones). Ergo there is more dogs in the world.

From what I can read from various sources, the world figures for cats and dogs is not definitive due to countries that do not keep or maintain statistical data re same.

There is statistical data for the number of cats and dogs in the United States---68 million owned dogs in the U.S.
73 million owned cats in the U.S.

In the end, the only important statistic is that dogs are BETTER than cats. The following link proves this conclusively. (even with the weak cat-supporting rebuttal)

Given that humans have selectively bred horses, cats and dogs over thousands of years, why is it that dogs show much more diversity in shape and size than the other two? In other words, the smallest and largest horse or cat are still "horse or cat shaped" but dogs seem to differ remarkably more in size and shape.
