Why do a number of Irish singers have a faltering or crackling feature to their voices now and again in songs, that no other nationality seems to have? (e.g. Bono, Sinead O'Connor, Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries, The Corrs) Is it genetic or just a cultural style?

In music lessons in Irish scools we were taught old Irish songs and airs -- very sad ones. For effect we were taught to include a sob into them. hence the faltering feature you refer to . It is a culture thing.
