In 1966, An american B-52 collided with a KC-135 (A mid-air re-fuelling plane) near Palomeres on the Spanish East Coast. The B-525 was carrying 4 nuclear bombs three were recovered. The fourth was not. A local fisherman Francisco Simo Orts (Paco) saw the bomb fall into the sea and was enlisted by the US to help find the bomb (valued by the U.S. secretary of defense at $2 billion) which they did. Later...
Paco and a lawyer turned up in the states claiming $20 million as 1% of the bomb's value in accordance with the custom of maritime law. The Air Force eventually settled for an undisclosed sum out of court.
