The Oldsmobile brand failed for many reasons, but mainly because GM tried to reposition it, and moved it away from its core customers, but it was too well established to be accepted by its new target audience.

    According to http://money.cnn.com/2004/04/28/pf/autos/olds_dead/
the decision to stop manufacturing Oldsmobiles at the Lansing Michigan plant was due to declining sales and lack of profitability.
