Prime Minister Mr.John Key said that if he got hit by a bus , he will have left New Zealand in a better shape than he found it. what in the world does it mean?

The phrase 'to be hit by a bus' refers to an unforeseen event that causes a dramatic change in the course of one's life. Hence, he was essentially saying that even if he achieved nothing more because he left office tomorrow, he is proud of what he has accomplished as Prime Minister.
