Where did we get the heart shape from?
Question
#128. Asked by curious.

Hawkeye
|
The stylized symbol of the heart goes back to the 1400s and an unknown Frenchman who designed the suits of the playing cards we are familiar with today. It isn't clear what he had in mind but it's fairly certain the suit designations had to do with the principal divisions of medieval society. The heart represents the clergy; the club, the peasants; the diamond, the merchants; and the spade (or sword) for the nobilty.
