Why can poison arrow frogs be safely kept as pets?

    Question #128033. Asked by daver852. (Nov 26 12 9:24 AM)

    nautilator

They don't create the poison on their own: they get it from mites (note: not ants) that they eat. No mites, no poison.

I was actually wondering this myself recently, and a friend gave me a logical answer. I was able to find a website as well.

This is actually because, in the wild, they become poisonous due to the certain type of ant they eat. In captivity, these frogs do not eat these ants, and therefore, do not become poisonous. So, as a pet, they will never be a poison frog, as they are in the wild. I guess it's true, you are what you eat.
