While recently looking for a hotel room, something called a "rack rate" kept coming up. What is it, and where did the term originate?

Question #128200. Asked by bubblesfun. (Dec 04 12 12:18 PM)

    shorthumbz

The full advertised price of a hotel room, excluding special deals, discounts, and group rates. The idea is never to pay it or book at it.

As to the origin of the term, it appears to have come out of the hotel industry and is linked to the concept of a bed as a "rack." (Sorry I didn't combine with the above)
