Where does the term "Indian Summer" come from?

Question #128202. Asked by wellenbrecher. (Dec 04 12 1:55 PM)

There are several possibilities, mostly from colonial America, renging from a break in cooling autumn weather allowing native peoples to renew their raiding on the colonists to the notion of a "false" summer, coming from the notion of "Indian" as a term referring to something that is not what it appears to be.
