When did the Oreo become a kosher food?

Question #128284. Asked by Penelopy. (Dec 09 12 6:43 AM)

    BRY2K

    1998 is the year:

The Oreo became kosher in 1998. All Oreo packing now bears a symbol, just above the package weight, verifying it as a kosher food. Hydrox cookies had long been a common kosher alternative, but, because not-as-tasty sort-of Oreos weren't super lucrative, they were discontinued in 2003.

Here is an interesting story about the process of "koshering" the iconic cookie:

Unbelieveable that a highly successful company would destroy their popular product eaten by millions to make it a secondary ingredient for ice cream!

This is not to say that Oreo's couldn't have been made in batches for the kosher market, but I do know that I quit buying them when they started tasting like cheap knockoffs of the original Oreos.
