Allspice is a single spice, also known as Jamaica Pepper, among other things. It was so called because it was originally thought to combine the flavours of a mixture of other spices, including cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Allspice is native to Central America and is important in various cuisines, including the Caribbean and the Middle East; many countries where sausages are popular; and in the UK largely for cake-making.
Mixed Spice on the other hand is a largely British invention, which usually contains ground allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg, but can also include cloves and ginger among others. It is also used in baking and in desserts, hence its other name of pudding spice.
