Assuming that the earth is 24,900 miles around at the equator (as we often hear), then a point on the equator would have to be traveling at a rate of 1037.5 mph.
Of course, points closer to the poles would be traveling at a lesser speed. If you were 10 feet from the pole, you would be barely moving. Same principle for a kids game of whip where kids join hands and go around a central focus point in a circle. The kids near the center are walking at an easy pace. The kid on the end is running like mad.
