The earliest known instance of organized reforestation was in Germany in 1368, and by the mid-18th century the practice was well established also in neighboring Austria, Switzerland, and France. German immigrants to the United States (notably Carl Schurz, the first Secretary of the Interior) were instrumental in conserving the new forest lands. http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/sci/A0858189.html In 1889 Vanderbilt hired a man by the name of Frederick Law Olmstead to handle the gardens and grounds of the magnificent Biltmore estate. On Olmstead's recomendation that the estate needed a 'Forest Manager' Vanderbilt hired a man by the name of Gifford Pinchot. His task at hand, to restore the forest. Subsequently, in 1895, German forester Dr. Carl A. Schenck accepted George Vanderbilt's offer to come to North Carolina to succeed Gifford Pinchot as manager of his vast forest properties. http://www.cradleofforestry.com/history.htm - and - http://www.forestryinfo.com/History/
