A furlong is 220 yards, but why was this distance named a furlong?

    Question #128652. Asked by arcane62. (Dec 29 12 8:23 AM)

The name derives from Old English furh (furrow) and lang (long). It referred originally to the leghth of each furrow in one acre of ploughed field and the system of these long furrows was efficient, given the difficulty of turning a pair of the oxen that pulled the plough.

The name comes from the Old English words of furh (meaning farrow) and lang (meaning long).
