Why did Microsoft name their new storage service "Cloud"?

Question #128669. Asked by deputygary. (Dec 30 12 7:42 AM)

    malama

Actually Microsoft's storage service is called SkyDrive.

The origin of the term "cloud storage" is unsure, in the early days the internet itself was called "the cloud" by some... Cloud storage is actually not a new concept, it is just being widely used by now.

See e.g http://blog.livedrive.com/2012/08/the-history-of-the-cloud/ and refs therein for a history of "the cloud"
