What Alex Haley novel was original going to be titled "The Surly Bonds of Earth:?

Question #128688. Asked by endoverend. (Dec 31 12 12:01 AM)

The first two lines of the John Gillespie Magee poem "High Flight" are:-

" Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;"

Author Arthur Hailey used these lines as an epigraph to his best selling novel "Airport".

I can find no connection between the quotation and Alex Haley, author of "Roots" and no relation to Mr Hailey.
