Is Latin taught in any American University?

Question #128774. Asked by kindlelady. (Jan 04 13 5:48 PM)

Surely, even if it is not the most popular of subjects. ;) (Obviously, there are questions about whether Latin is studied ab initio (from scratch), to what level and for what purpose(s).

Duke University even has a graduate school of Classical Studies.

It is taught in (probably) over a hundred of them. Most major US universities have a Classics department that offers a major (or strong minor) in Latin or Classics with a Latin emphasis. Here are two right off the top of my head:

There's an undergraduate course at the University of Michigan for example:

Well, since I majored in Classical Languages as an undergraduate and engaged in graduate studies in Greek and Latin, I can personally attest to the fact that Latin is taught on both levels. My classmate teaches Latin at Davidson in North Carolina. The University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill both have excellent Classics graduate and undergraduate programs. I could go on for paragraphs based on my own personal knowledge, and I suppose I could find links for other programs I am not personally familiar with. So the answer to your question is undoubtedly "Yes".

Here is the class listing for Latin 101, 102, 201, and 202 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The University of Alaska Anchorage offers only Latin 101 and 102.

Hmm, bad link there. Go here and then select "Latin."
