A lamp ('The Lamp of Knowledge') is often used as such a symbol.

According to the sites I went into there are a number of symbols depending on what you are looking for. www.planetkc.com/ccumc/history.html is a site that explains the window in a church. The symbolism of this one is "the lancet to the viewers right show the Apostle rising from the LAMP the ancient symbol of knowledge and learning." Then www.detc.org/contest/awards.html tells about the National Honor Society symbol of knowledge and learning which is the FLAMING TORCH. The Akan Africans symbol is 'Nea Onnim' literally translated means "He who does not know can become knowledgeable from learning; he who thinks he knows and ceases to continue to learn will stagnate." I would imagine ekptcruzn would go with the National Honor Society symbol. That is the one I always heard about, THE FLAMING TORCH
